The study was very small, had no randomized control group and tested a specific commercial ointment rather than menthol alone. A positive signal from 18 participants is not enough to establish consistent efficacy across a wider population.
AAD's interpretation is appropriately cautious
AAD notes that small studies of mentholated ointment and tea tree oil suggest there may be some benefit, but larger studies are needed to determine effectiveness and possible side effects.
